Posted by Renovator Mate on 19 Jan 2021

A lush carpet spread across a room serves more than one purpose. It protects the floors, keeps your feet warm during chilly winters, and adds a hint of richness and glamour to your space. But, keeping the carpets clean is a humongous task.

According to some studies, carpet houses over 200,000 bacteria per square inch, making it worse than a toilet seat. Another study suggests that more than 2000 dust mites inhabit an ounce of carpet dust. Moreover, carpets, along with other textiles, absorb contaminants and hamper the indoor air quality.

But, before these numbers and facts paste a frown over your forehead, let us introduce you to some useful tips that will keep your carpet spotless and enhance its longevity.

Create a vacuuming routine

A proper vacuum cleaning schedule does much more than you anticipate. Vacuuming your carpet helps you to get rid of the allergens, pet hair, food crumbs, and dust lodged in your carpet.

Make sure you thoroughly vacuum your carpet at least twice a week, especially if you have a pet or a small kid in your house.

Regular vacuuming will trim the chances of dirt build-up and increase the shelf-life of your carpet.

Don’t ignore deep cleaning

Regular vacuuming is a potent way to get rid of the superficial dust and grime, but for embedded dirt, greasy deposits, and spots, you need to follow a deep cleaning routine, and for this, you need to buy a carpet cleaner.

Always buy carpet cleaner designed specifically for deep cleaning of dirty carpets. These carpet cleaners use a natural cleaning solution that is injected into the carpet through a water-jet nozzle. Pressurized water extracts all the deep-seated dirt and debris.

This carpet cleaning method removes 90% of contaminants, like germs, bacteria, mould, mites, mildew, fungi, dust, and other irritants from the carpet. Moreover, it helps you get rid of stubborn stains, ingrained dust, and odour from your carpet.

Look for carpet cleaners to buy on the internet and invest in the one that comes with multiple attachments to facilitate efficient carpet cleaning.

Use soda or vinegar to remove stains

Even a small stain can ruin the overall appearance of your carpet. Thankfully, you can easily remove stains using some easy hacks.

Pour some soda on a clean rag and carefully blot the stain. You will observe that the stain is getting lighter. Pour some more soda and blot some more.

Alternatively, use a mix of white vinegar and water (1:1 ratio) and spray it on the stain. Let it rest for 10 to 15 minutes, and then press a dry sponge over the area. The sponge will soak the solution, as well as the diluted stain.

Now, remove the sponge and brush the strands in one direction, and lay some paper towels to absorb the dampness. Let them stay there for a day.

Freeze dry chewing gum

Chewing gums always find their way to carpets and upholstery, giving you a tough time. But, removing sticky chewing gums from your carpet is not rocket science.

All you need to do is press some ice cubes against the gum for at least 30 to 50 seconds. The gum will freeze, and once frozen, lift the sticky mess (not so sticky once frozen) with a spoon. Cut the strands closest to the glob with a sharp knife or scissors.

Remove rigid wax with the heat

Wax stains can be a pain in the neck. Melted wax dripping on the carpet can harden, never to go again. However, heating rigid wax is a potent way to remove the wax embedded in the carpet fibres.

Place a cloth on the carpet, take an iron, and adjust it on the no-steam setting. Place the hot iron on top of the wax until it begins to melt. Once it attains a semi-liquid state, scrape it off using a butter knife.
